What Are the Types of Competencies?

Each type of competency plays a specific role in the workplace to achieve effective performance and meet organizational goals. Among the most prominent types of competencies are:

  • Soft Skills: The personal skills and traits individuals need to interact positively with others and demonstrate supportive behaviors that foster cooperation and harmony in the workplace, such as emotional intelligence and effective communication.
  • Core Competencies: The skills, knowledge, and behavioral competencies essential for all individuals in the company, regardless of their positions or roles, with the aim of improving individual and team performance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, such as adaptability, continuous learning, and critical thinking.
  • Executive Competencies: Skills specific to implementing strategies and plans at a high level, such as decision-making, strategic planning, management change, and fostering teamwork.
  • Functional Competencies: The specific skills and knowledge required to perform a particular job effectively, such as technical knowledge, practical experience, accuracy, and attention to detail, to ensure high quality, specialization, and professionalism in performing job duties and in developing and improving processes and products.
  • Managerial Competencies: The abilities needed to effectively manage individuals, teams, and projects to achieve organizational goals, meet daily work requirements, and improve internal processes, such as leadership, time management, and problem-solving.
  • Professional Competencies: The knowledge and standards individuals need to succeed in their specific field of work, make progress in specialized performance, and adhere to professional standards—such as the ability to provide advanced and complex solutions based on extensive experience in the field.

What is talent acquisition?

Talent acquisition is the long-term process undertaken by organizations to attract and hire individuals who possess the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to achieve the organization’s goals. It focuses on identifying qualified employees who align with the company’s culture, and who can play a role in enhancing its performance and productivity, and then hiring them to contribute to achieving organizational goals.
