Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a model that aims to make companies socially accountable to themselves and to society. What are the goals of corporate social responsibility? What are the most important corporate social responsibility initiatives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? And how do companies implement corporate social responsibility?

What is corporate social responsibility?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be defined as a business model that helps companies be socially responsible toward themselves, their communities, and their stakeholders, to operate in ways that positively contribute to society, the environment, and the economy through a set of practices integrated into their culture and business operations, and to launch initiatives aligned with sustainable development and public safety laws to achieve tangible and meaningful impact.

Why is corporate social responsibility important?

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a priority for business leaders due to its role in society and the environment, in addition to the benefits it brings to businesses and organizations, such as:

  • Enhancing Brand Image: Many companies view social responsibility activities as an important part of their brand image, which helps build a reputation for supporting the community, raises awareness of their business, and provides a competitive advantage that leads to greater success, long-term sustainability, and attracts investors.
  • Attracting Customers: The social and environmental activities and initiatives offered by companies attract more customers who prefer to do business with companies that support social values, thereby fostering community loyalty and support, which in turn increases the customer base and revenue.
  • Improved Employee Recruitment and Retention: Through responsible and sustainable initiatives, companies can facilitate the hiring of new employees and retain current ones, who are motivated to stay longer, thereby reducing recruitment and retraining costs.
  • Strengthening public relations: Social responsibility helps build strong, sustainable relationships with the community by supporting local causes and participating in community initiatives, which increases local residents’ support for the company and opens opportunities for networking with other organizations, companies, and businesses.
  • Boosting Employee Morale: CSR activities help foster a stronger bond among employees, boost morale and enthusiasm, and help them feel more connected to the world around them.
  • Risk mitigation: Mitigating the risks companies face by preventing negative activities such as discrimination against employees, neglect of natural resources, and the unethical use of company funds.
  • Legal Compliance: New laws require companies to adhere to certain ethical standards, such as not paying employees low wages or employing child labor, and community support helps companies better comply with these laws and regulations.

What are the types of corporate social responsibility?

CSR encompasses a wide range of initiatives aimed at achieving a positive impact on society and the environment. Companies’ commitment to these various types of social responsibility is a way to enhance their reputation and improve their long-term financial performance. These initiatives fall into several main categories, such as:

Environmental Sustainability

Corporate initiatives in this area focus on reducing pollution and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring that their operations are environmentally friendly—such as using eco-friendly manufacturing processes and packaging, reducing their carbon footprint, minimizing air, water, and soil pollution, and raising environmental awareness among consumers.

Ethical Practices

Focus on ensuring that employees are treated fairly and equitably, such as by providing fair wages, improving working conditions, and applying fair trade standards to products and services, as well as a commitment to transparency and integrity in all aspects of business, combating corruption, and ensuring workers’ rights in all workplaces, particularly in countries where labor laws may be less stringent.

Volunteering

Supporting local initiatives without financial compensation and encouraging employees to engage with local issues and volunteer at community events to support various causes and improve the local community, thereby strengthening the relationship between the company and the community.

Examples of Corporate Social Responsibility in Saudi Arabia

Many Saudi companies have adopted various initiatives to support the community and the environment and to strengthen their social responsibility. Among the most prominent examples of corporate social responsibility in Saudi Arabia are:

  • The scholarship program launched by SABIC in 2019, which benefits many high school graduates by enabling them to pursue higher education and enter the workforce in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
  • The Cardiac Catheterization Center at Al-Ras General Hospital, and the Center for Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Smoking Cessation at Turaif General Hospital, established by Al-Rajhi Company to improve health services provided to the Saudi community.
  • The Almarai Award for Scientific Creativity, presented by Almarai Company; the Almarai Award for Academic Excellence for public school students in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries; and the Almarai Award for Veterinarians, all aimed at motivating students and professionals to achieve the highest levels of academic and professional performance.
